This image was taken during the last stages of the build of this stunning home designed by Arklen. It is visible from the entry of the home had to cope with harsh sun in summer and none for the rest of the year. The limestone walls are high and alkaline at the base. Not much fun for most plants...

CLAD THAT PERGOLA

An ornamental grape vine is one of our favourites for draping from a pergola. It gives us a colourful leafy show in autumn and lush cooling shade in summer, dropping its leaves to allow natural light into the house and garden in winter.

COPING WITH SLOPING

A classy home needs a classy garden. In this south/east aspect of the property, we chose native ground covers, soil binders and succulents to cope with the sloping terrain. Steps made from compacted gravel and galvanised steel were placed along the inner courtyard wall to provide easier access to the ‘whittling’ bench.

Summer sun winter shade - that old chestnut

For most garden designers, this aspect is often a challenge. Dampness and lack of sun in winter with harsh afternoon sun in summer is not a position loved by many plants. Here in Perth, Western Australia, the summer sun is relentless and unforgiving, often hitting 38-40C. For weeks with no relief.

Our nature loving clients wanted to be able to sit on their bench in their planty sanctuary and watch the birds in the remnant bushland across the road.

Here; grasses, select succulents, philodendrons and other sun tolerating shade plants rose to the challenge. We employed the use of lomandra, dichondra and bromeliads to assist.
